SUMMARY:ISO Relationship Series: Academic Relationships
DESCRIPTION:E19-202 \n\n\n\nThis spring semester\, come learn about the expectations for academic and professional relationship building\, as well as tips for building your community and making friends in the US. \n\n\n\nOpen to all international students: undergrad\, grad\, and non-degree students. Please register for the events you are interested in.All three sessions will be held in person\, and lunch will be served.  \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Relationships in academia are not any less complicated in than relationships in life outside it\, regardless it is with lab-mates\, other fellow students\, or with faculty\, and administrators.     A relationship necessarily requires two\, at least two parties.   We\, as one of the parties may account no more than 50% of the variance\, but we most definitely account for some of the variance.   And we are both the independent variables and dependent variables\, as if there is not enough complexity already. \n\n\n\nThis talk hopes to be evoke curiosity and mindfulness of the variables that go into an academic relationship and the dynamics of them\, the directions of the variables’ movement\, the interactional effect that hopefully can lead to better recognition and understanding of the effect\,  independently or interactively\, of these variables and how to navigate them. \n\n\n\nPresented by: Dr. Xiaolu Hsi\, MIT Student Mental Health & Counseling Services \n\n\n\nAUDIO RECORDINGHANDOUT (no slides were used)

SUMMARY:MIT Film Premiere: Brief Tender Light
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED to Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024On Tuesday\, February 13\, the Museum will present Brief Tender Light\, a new documentary from Ghanaian filmmaker Arthur Musah ’04\, MNG ’05 that follows four African undergraduates through MIT. A Q & A with the filmmaker and one of the film’s stars\, Philip Abel Adama ’15\, will follow the screening. This free event is exclusively for the MIT community.*Seating is limited and early arrival is suggested.**Valid MIT is required for admission. \n\n\n\nThe students embark on their MIT education with individual ambitions –  to engineer infrastructure in Tanzania; to secure a better life for family in Nigeria; to contribute to post-genocide reconstruction in Rwanda; to advance democracy in Zimbabwe. Their missions are distinct\, but fueled by a common goal: to become agents of positive change back home.    \n\n\n\nWhile their dreams are anchored in the societies they have left\, their daily realities are defined by America – by the immediate challenges in their MIT classrooms\, and by the larger social issues confronting the world beyond those classrooms. Their new environment demands they adapt. Over an intimate\, nearly decade-long journey spanning two continents\, students and filmmaker alike are forced to decide how much of America to absorb\, how much of Africa to hold on to\, and how to reconcile teenage ideals with the truths they discover about the world and themselves.
