SUMMARY:ISO Relationship Series: Navigating Academic Relationships
DESCRIPTION:This spring semester\, join us to explore the expectations for academic and professional relationship building\, along with tips for building your community and making friends in the US.1pm to 2pm in E19-202; Lunch served at each event \n\n\n\nApril 4     Navigating Academic Relationships April 18   Friendship & Community Building April 24   Professional Relationships in the US Workplace \n\n\n\nNavigating Academic Relationships:Presented by Dr. Xiaolu Hsi\, MIT Student Mental Health & Counseling Services \n\n\n\nRelationships in academia are not any less complicated in than relationships in life outside it\, regardless it is with lab-mates\, other fellow students\, or with faculty\, and administrators. A relationship necessarily requires two\, at least two parties. We\, as one of the parties may account no more than 50% of the variance\, but we most definitely account for some of the variance. And we are both the independent variables and dependent variables\, as if there is not enough complexity already. \n\n\n\nThis talk hopes to be evoke curiosity and mindfulness of the variables that go into an academic relationship and the dynamics of them\, the directions of the variables’ movement\, the interactional effect that hopefully can lead to better recognition and understanding of the effect\, independently or interactively\, of these variables and how to navigate them. \n\n\n\nOpen to all international students: undergrad\, grad\, and non-degree students. Please register for the events you are interested in.

SUMMARY:IAP: What Every International Student and Trainee Should Know about U.S. Employment
DESCRIPTION:Our most popular workshop of the year!Talk by Dan BeaudryDate & Time: Thursday\, January 9\, 2025; 12pm ET – 1:30pm ETRegistration required on HandshakeDan Beaudry\, former head of campus recruiting at Monster.com\, shares the potent job search system used by many international students and trainees to find U.S. employment. H-1B’s are won in ways you likely don’t expect. What you’ll discover in this presentation may surprise you: \n\n\n\n• Learn how to secure H-1B sponsorship at companies that have a policy against sponsoring H-1B visas. \n\n\n\n• Learn why 80 percent of open jobs are never advertised – and how to find them before anyone else. \n\n\n\n• Learn why human resources is often an obstacle instead of a conduit to finding a U.S. job-and how to bypass it. \n\n\n\n• Learn why only submitting résumés online is not the most effective use of your time-and how you can better invest that time. \n\n\n\nFind more information about Dan Beaudry and his book\, “The International Student’s Guide to Finding a Job in the United States”\, at www.powerties.net. This presentation is open to MIT undergraduates\, graduate students\, postdocs\, and alumni. Note that at the request of the speaker\, this session will not be recorded. \n\n\n\nThe event is hosted by Career Advising & Professional Development (CAPD)\, and also sponsored by the Office of Graduate Education (OGE)\, the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)\, and the International Students Office (ISO). \n\n\n\nPlease indicate any accommodation needs by completing the following survey: https://airtable.com/shrfsjcovcoDIN0da  \n\n\n\nNote: Accommodation requests should be submitted one week in advance of an event. If accommodations are not possible due to the late timing of the request\, a team member will reach out to you to discuss alternative resources and/or solutions.
