If a student wishes to change their program of study—either their major field of study or degree level—the student must work with the ISO so appropriate reporting in SEVIS may occur in a timely manner and a new visa document can be issued to reflect the new program of study.

Effective September 15, 2026, under a USDHS Final Rule, limitations will be placed on the ability to change majors or program of study, or change of educational levels, for all students in F or J nonimmigrant status.
