Writing a Check

Writing a Check

Americans still write checks for things such as paying rent and paying back a friend (although nowadays it’s much more common to use apps such as Venmo to pay each other back). Most landlords still insist on rent checks, and if you’re sending money to the government for immigration purposes, it’s helpful to know how to write one. Please see the below diagram for instructions.

Very important: The date in the U.S. is written differently from many countries: Month/Day/Year. Generally in other countries the day is written first and the month second. Please be aware that this will present a problem and the check will be rejected because of the wrong date. You don’t want to write a check that says January 12th (01/12/2020) when you really meant December 1st (12/01/2020). To be safe, always write out the month (December instead of 12).
